Buying an older home comes with projects, lots of projects. And I am so thankful for the projects. They keep me on my toes and the dreaming just seems never ending. The list is also never ending. My favorite project so far in the house was this little gem of a room makeover.
My dad knew I wanted ship lap on the bedroom wall, but when he saw the dining room, he suggested we also do two walls in there. That’s when the project started and in total it was a 72 hour project. All dining room decor is linked at the bottom of the post!

Here were the steps we took to achieve this look:
- We had to knock off the chair rail along the middle of the wall and use plaster to re-texture the wall.
- Then while we waited for that to dry, we got right to work on the ship lap. My dad and step mom did this entire project.
- My dad cut and measured three different layers of the ship lap and then just repeated down the wall. While he did this, I filled in the nail gun holes with painters putty.
- We primed and painted the walls that weren’t being ship lapped and the ceilings. Because of the texture, it took a few extra coats of paint in a few areas.
- When the ship lap was done, we caulked all of the trim and edges that needed caulking. We then painted immediately on the ship lap. We got ship lap that was already primed so that we wouldn’t have to prime before painting. Just to clarify, the primed ship lap was white not wooden planks.
