I was sixteen years old when I met Alex. We both played varsity soccer and all of our friends were dating each other so we were naturally forced to always be around each other. A few months later we started texting (after some really bad Chuck Norris jokes and pick up lines via Facebook messages) and the rest is history. More on how we started dating/our relationship timeline is to come, but for the actual proposal- here is my version of the story (and trust me…his version is different haha).
It was the afternoon of the 28th of December and I was slowly getting ready for our date that Alex had planned about a week prior. He had mentioned he really wanted to go to our favorite hole in the wall Italian restaurant when he was back from his family Christmas trip. He set the plans for the following Friday and said it would be a date night. This restaurant is so special to me because I worked there for over 5 years and Alex would come visit me at least once a week in high school and have dessert while I was closing the restaurant… but at the same time, it wasn’t anything I should’ve been suspicious of because we eat there once a month-ish. As I was getting ready (and I was taking my sweet time), Alex was cleaning the entire apartment. I also didn’t think into this much because we are both really clean people and like to keep our place really neat.
I finished getting ready and we headed out toward Mckinney for dinner. When we got there, nothing was different/unusual except that it felt like Alex and I talked much less than we normally do. I was secretely hoping all day that he would ask me to marry him, but I tried to not get my hopes up too much. The owners of the restaurant all came by to see if we were married/engaged yet (their favorite question to ask me lol). As we were finishing dinner, Alex excused himself to the bathroom and I was texting my best friend telling her I was so hopeful that it would happen. Something just seemed different about him that was making all of my red flags go off, but then again, I thought this about a few of our other recent date nights.
We got in the car after dinner and Alex asked if we could run by Heritage (our high school) because the boys soccer alumni game was that night. He said some of the boys wanted to see us and asked if that was okay. This is the first year Alex wasn’t allowed to play because of his age. He had played every other year after he graduated in this game, and I didn’t miss any of the alumni games either. Of course I said yes to stopping by because I love any chance to be a high school hero (and I secretly wished he would ask me at our high school). At this point, I went into complete shock mode and he played our song as we drove through the parking lot. There were zero cars in the parking lot and that is when I texted my best friend saying “OH MY GOD”. She replied with a simple “:)” and I was BEYOND excited and also felt like I was going to throw up all at once haha.
He parked and walked me all the way to the 50 yard line on the same soccer field that we both spent countless nights on. As we were walking out on the field he was saying how we’ve been together for over 7 years and how he couldn’t picture his life with anyone else. Other than that, I have no idea what he said because I was still in shock mode and really just staring at him and trying to take in the whole moment. It seemed like 30 seconds and 5 years all at once and all I knew in that moment is that there is no one in this world I would rather be walking on that field with or into marriage with than him. His mom recorded a video from the press box and his sister took photos and it was truly the most special night…but it was far from over.
As we were driving away from the field his mom said “we’ll see you at the bar”. I knew immediately all of my family would be there and got even more excited. Alex was in “stall mode” and asked if we could stop first at Racetrack (where I swear he spent 10 mins inside) and then wanted to grab a coffee at Starbucks. We had his coffee all of two minutes before the aux cord got wrapped around the cup and spilled allllllllll down my leg. Looking back it was such a funny moment because my leg was burning and I was screaming that is was “FREAKING HOT”, but I also was just so excited still that it didn’t even really affect me.
I obviously told Alex we had to go home so I could change (and by the way, the spilling wasn’t part of the plan- it was a total accident). When we walked up to the door, I could hear everyone inside and I just looked at Alex and knew that we weren’t going to a bar and that I was going to have to walk in my apartment to all of my family and friends with soaking pants haha. It was the best surprise to see all of my friends and family in one room. It was seriously the sweetest night with my favorite people celebrating my favorite night yet!
We talked and we laughed and we took more pictures than I can count. I can’t even describe the amount of joy I felt that night. It was seriously so overwhelming (in a good way). I kid you not I couldn’t get off the couch the whole next day just reading so many text messages, Instagram comments and staring at my Fiancé. That night goes down as one of my favorite memories EVER.
We have been over the moon excited to get married and start all of the planning. We are also so grateful to all of the people that love us and care for us SO much. All of this writing has made me really want to share our “how we met” story. I will try and sit down to recount all of the memories from that and pull up the Facebook pick up lines that he slid into my DM’s with 😉
Until then, thank you for reading this novel of a post! I can’t wait for all the wedding content to come! It’s going to be the most fun (and possibly slightly stressful) journey!
